Although the pancreas is primarily an exocrine gland, secreting a variety of digestive enzymes, it has endocrine functions. Its pancreatic islets (clusters of cells formerly called islets of Langerhans) secrete two main hormones: glucagon and insulin. These two hormones regulate the rate of glucose metabolism/homeostasis in the body.
